5 Ways You're Wasting Money On Klaviyo (And How To Stop)

> "You're literally paying $60/month just because you have 2,000 contacts sitting there, even if you're only sending a handful of emails."

Klaviyo bills by active profiles. And their definition of "active" is... generous.

Here are 5 ways you're wasting money — and how to plug the leaks.

1. Paying For "Active" Profiles That Never Open

The problem: Klaviyo counts as "active" any profile that COULD receive an email. Not profiles that actually engage.

> "That inactive customer from 2018? Billable. That person who clicked 'no marketing' at checkout? Billable."

The math:

- 10,000 profiles = ~$150/month

- If 40% haven't opened in 6+ months, you're paying $60/month for nothing

The fix:

1. Create a segment: "Has not opened email in 90+ days"

2. Run a win-back campaign (3 emails, last chance)

3. Anyone who doesn't engage → Suppress them

Warning: Don't delete. Suppress. You keep the data, just stop paying to store inactive profiles.

2. Duplicate Profiles Everywhere

The problem: The same person signed up with different email addresses, or imported with variations.

- john@email.com

- john.doe@email.com

- John@Email.com

All three might count as separate billable profiles.

The fix:

- Regularly dedupe your list

- Merge profiles where possible

- Clean imports before uploading

Savings: Varies, but 5-15% of lists often have duplicate issues.

3. Hard Bounces Still On Your List

The problem: Email addresses that don't exist anymore should be automatically suppressed. But sometimes they aren't — and you're still paying for them.

How to check:

- Go to Lists & Segments → Suppressed

- Check "Hard bounces" count

- These should NOT count toward your billing, but verify

What to do:

- Review your suppression lists

- Make sure hard bounces are properly categorized

- Report to Klaviyo support if bounced profiles are still billing

4. Paying For Profiles You Never Email

The problem: You have 25,000 profiles. You send campaigns to 5,000.

> "We have 25,000 emails of people that have purchased and signed up... We send out an email 8-10 times a year — tops."

You're paying to store 20,000 profiles you're not using.

The options:

1. Actually email them — Set up flows and campaigns to make them valuable

2. Suppress inactive ones — If they haven't engaged in 180+ days

3. Accept the cost — But only if you have a plan to use them

The math:

- 25,000 profiles = ~$400-500/month

- If you only email 5,000, you're paying for 20,000 dormant profiles

- Either activate them or suppress them

5. Not Sending Enough To Justify The Cost

The problem: Klaviyo is expensive. If you're only sending 8 emails a year, cheaper options exist.

> "Klaviyo's $2,300/mo for 206k actives vs omnisend's custom pricing"

When Klaviyo is worth it:

- You're using advanced segmentation

- You're running sophisticated flows

- You need detailed revenue attribution

- Email is a major revenue channel (20%+ of sales)

When it's NOT worth it:

- You send occasional newsletters

- You don't use flows

- You're not segmenting

- Email is less than 5% of revenue

The fix:

- Either USE Klaviyo's features to justify the cost

- Or migrate to a cheaper tool (Mailchimp, Shopify Email)

The Real Question: Is Klaviyo Paying For Itself?

Calculate your email ROI:

1. Monthly Klaviyo cost: $___

2. Monthly email revenue (from Klaviyo dashboard): $___

3. ROI = (Revenue / Cost) x 100

Benchmarks:

- Under 5x ROI: You're not using email effectively

- 5-10x ROI: Acceptable, room for improvement

- 10-30x ROI: Good

- 30x+ ROI: Excellent

> "I have multiple websites and have used Klaviyo for years. I was not seeing the ROI."

If you're under 5x, the problem isn't Klaviyo. It's how you're using it.

How To Turn Wasted Spend Into Revenue

Step 1: Stop the bleeding

- Suppress non-engagers (90+ days no opens)

- Dedupe your list

- Calculate your actual email ROI

Step 2: Start earning

- Set up essential flows (Welcome, Abandoned Cart, Post-Purchase)

- Send more campaigns (8-12/month)

- Segment properly (don't blast everyone)

Step 3: Optimize

- A/B test subject lines

- Improve deliverability

- Review flow performance monthly
