5 Lies SEO Agencies Tell You (And What's Actually True)
> "95% of SEO agencies are charlatans or scammers."
That's a direct quote from a business owner. And while it might be slightly exaggerated... not by much.
After talking to hundreds of ecommerce owners who've been burned by agencies, here are the 5 most common lies — and the truth behind each.
Lie #1: "SEO Takes 6-12 Months To See Results"
What they say: "Just trust the process. Results take time."
The truth: Some SEO takes that long. Most doesn't.
> "A lot of SEO doesn't take months to show results. That's BS agencies tell you to buy themselves time to figure out what works for you (or just milking you for monthly services)."
What can move faster:
- Technical fixes (crawl errors, speed, mobile issues): 2-4 weeks
- "Almost ranking" pages pushed to page 1: 4-8 weeks
- Local SEO improvements: 2-6 weeks
- Content refreshes on existing pages: 4-8 weeks
What actually takes 6-12 months:
- Brand new websites building authority
- Highly competitive keywords
- Building substantial backlink profiles
The red flag: Agency can't tell you which of your opportunities are quick wins vs. long plays. They just say "wait."
Lie #2: "It's The Algorithm Update — We Need To Wait"
What they say: "Google just updated. Give it 1-3 months to settle."
> "And then when Google updates its algorithm, the SEO freelancer or agency will say 'oh it's an update. We need to wait 1-3 months to see results in rankings'"
The truth: Algorithm updates happen constantly. Waiting is the default excuse for agencies with no strategy.
What you should ask:
- "What specifically changed that affected our site?"
- "What are you doing to address the update's focus areas?"
- "Can you show me which pages dropped and why?"
The red flag: They can't point to specific changes on YOUR site. They just vaguely blame "the algorithm."
Lie #3: "We're Doing Strategic Link Building"
What they say: "We're building high-quality backlinks to improve your authority."
The truth: Most agency "link building" is either:
- Spam links that will hurt you
- Directory submissions that do nothing
- Paying for links on PBNs (against Google's rules)
- Nothing at all
Questions to ask:
- "Can you show me the exact links you've built this month?"
- "What's the Domain Authority of these sites?"
- "Are these editorial placements or paid links?"
> "I hired an agency with a $5K retainer for 90 days and the results were shit."
The red flag: They can't show you specific links, or the links are from suspicious/irrelevant sites.
Lie #4: "We're Optimizing Your Content"
What they say: "We're doing on-page optimization and content improvements."
The truth: This often means:
- Changing title tags slightly
- Adding alt text to images
- Basic stuff that takes 2 hours, not 20
What real content optimization includes:
- Comprehensive keyword research per page
- Content expansion to cover topic thoroughly
- User intent alignment
- Internal linking strategy
- Schema markup implementation
> "I feel like they're using my business to train the new guy or figure out if this new method works."
The red flag: They can't show you before/after of content changes. They just send monthly reports with vanity metrics.
Lie #5: "Trust Our Proprietary Process"
What they say: "We have a proven methodology. Just trust us."
The truth: If they can't explain what they're doing in plain English, they're either:
- Doing nothing substantive
- Doing black-hat tactics they don't want you to know about
- Making it up as they go
What transparent agencies provide:
- Detailed task lists of what they did each month
- Access to tools showing your rankings/traffic
- Clear explanations of strategy and priorities
- Honest conversations about what's working and not
> "The industry is so saturated it's almost impossible to weed through the garbage to find a good company."
The red flag: Secrecy about methods. Proprietary tools you can't access. Refusal to explain strategy.
How To Tell If Your Agency Is Actually Good
Good signs:
✓ They can explain their strategy in plain language
✓ They show you exactly what they've done each month
✓ They set realistic expectations (not "page 1 guaranteed")
✓ They focus on your business goals, not just rankings
✓ They tell you when something ISN'T working
Bad signs:
✗ Vague promises without specifics
✗ "Just trust the process" without transparency
✗ Can't show you the actual work they've done
✗ Guaranteed rankings or timeframes
✗ Long contracts with no performance clauses
The Alternative: Get Clarity First
Before you hire (another) agency or spend months waiting for results that never come...
Know exactly what's broken first.
Our SEO Audit shows you:

- What's actually fixable (and how fast)
Then you can decide: fix it yourself, hire someone specific to fix specific things, or work with an agency with actual accountability.
No more mystery. No more "trust the process." Just clarity.
